Denton- A few soon to be graduates are disappointed with UNT’s commencement ceremony set to take place in November.

The in-person event will take place at Apogee stadium, but graduates will not be individually recognized.

Fall 2020 graduate Gabby Conely says she feels like the email sent out to students about the event was misleading.

“The email they sent was very vague, in the big bold letters it said in person graduation, which UNT is trying to make it seem like it’s a real graduation when it’s not,” said Conely.

The event is supposed to honor all Fall 2020 graduates, but a few graduates don’t feel they are being honored.

“It seems to be not fair that they’re allowing football games to take place, but they’re not allowing us to walk the stage, it makes no sense that we can sit six feet apart in a stadium and listen to a speech but we can’t walk the stage six feet apart with masks on,” said Conely.

Other students who agree with Conely have started a petition on social media asking the university to allow them to walk across the stage.

So far the petition has nearly 300 signatures and can be found here.

In the UNT official announcement, the university says keeping the safety of the UNT community is their highest priority.

Fall 2020 graduates will have the opportunity to attend a virtual college recognition ceremony hosted by their College Dean’s where they will be individually recognized.
